Animal Shelter Christmas Open House: A Time of Sharing

From December 13 through December 24, the Hibbing Animal Shelter and Humane Society is holding a Christmas Open House at the Shelter. The hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The purpose of the Open House is two-fold: first, to acquaint the public with our many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens waiting for adoption, and secondly, to ask for Christmas donations of pet supplies for the Shelter, as well as for those people in the community who are in need of help caring for their animals. We want people to help out families first, of course, but if they can afford it, to also remember our animal friends with gifts of dog and cat food, pet treats and chews, toys, catnip, blankets and collars.

The Shelter recommends Pedigree Dog Kibble (for large and small breeds), Purina Puppy Chow, Meow Mix Dry Cat Food, Friskies Canned Cat Food, and Purina Kitten Chow. The Shelter will collect the donations and then share and distribute them at the Salvation Army, on December 23, to pet owners who need pet food and supplies. The public is asked to stop in at the Shelter, or call them, to either donate supplies, or request them for their pets in need. Our hours are from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

To join in with the Christmas spirit, the Shelter will be serving hot apple cider and cookies from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday from December 13 through December 24.

The Shelter encourages everyone to stop by the Shelter, see our pets, listen to Christmas carols, have a hot drink, and donate if they can. The Shelter is located at 11215 Hwy 37, Hibbing. It is ½ mile west of the airport, on the north side of Hwy 37, (tan and green building). The phone number is (218) 262-1900. You can see photos of our pets for adoption at www.petfinder.com

Education Forum in Hibbing

Preparing a world class workforce: How can Minnesota students achieve better outcomes in the K-12 system? Learn about the Minnesota Chamber's recommendations and provide your feedback!

Tuesday, September 14 at 8:00 a.m. at the Hibbing Park Hotel/Grandma's in the Park

Minnesota does pretty well nationally. But the numbers behind the statistics are not quite as positive - and Minnesota employers have known this for a long time. Only 73 percent of Minnesota seniors graduated on time in 2007. MnSCU reports that nearly 40% of students need remedial learning; and Minnesota has the second highest achievement gap in the country.

Join us for a discussion addressing necessary education reforms that will improve the quality of our future workforce by addressing ways to close the achievement gap, and improve student outcomes including high quality teachers; and learn about ways that your voice can be heard to make these changes.

Please confirm your attendance by contacting Kim Anderson at kanderson@mnchamber.com or 651-292-4676 or the Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce at 218-262-3895 .

Fireworks Tips from the Police and Fire Deparment

Yearly, area emergency rooms treat injuries caused by fireworks. Your 4th of July celebration could end in serious injury if illegal fireworks are used. Fireworks that explode or move under their own power are illegal to use or have regardless of where they were purchased.

Legal fireworks include caps for cap guns, toy snakes, sparklers and devices that spray confetti, streamers or sparks. If children are in or around fireworks, please keep them under close supervision.

Fireworks are always a fun way to spend the 4th of July, but so many people are injured each year by illegal fireworks. Please think twice before allowing your children to play with fireworks.

Many local fireworks shows will happen over the weekend let the professionals launch the real fireworks while you sit back and relax!

Preserving the Old Country

Preserving the Old Country: The Experiences of Croatians, Serbians, and Slovenians in St. Louis County

A traveling exhibit produced by St. Louis County Historical Society, entitled The Experiences of Croatians, Serbians, and Slovenians in St. Louis County will open to the public on April 3, 2010 in the St. Louis County Courthouse in Hibbing.

The exhibit was developed by Kristen Belich, a Society intern from the College of St. Scholastica, and graphically designed by David Hodges, Curator of the Duluth Institute of Art.

The exhibit focuses on the "Old Country" (formerly Yugoslavia and now chiefly the modern states of Croatia, Serbia, and Slovenia) and the immigration from it to northeastern Minnesota beginning in the 1860's and continuing through the larger wave of immigration that occurred between the 1880's and the 1920's. The political history of the region that provided the impetus for leaving the Old Country is explored in depth, as well as the reasons St. Louis County was chosen by so many southeastern Europeans as their final destination. It also explores the elements of cultural continuity readily apparent today, particularly evident in music, food, and family values.

After the exhibit leaves the Hibbing courthouse it will move to St. George's Serbian Orthodox Church in Gary (Duluth) for several months. It will then move to the St. Louis County Courthouse in Virginia, Minnesota, and subsequently will be available upon request to other organizations, as part of the St. Louis County Historical Society's Traveling Exhibit Program.

HCC auditions for "Gypsy"

Hibbing Community College Theatre announces auditions for the Tony Award winning musical "Gypsy" Book by Arthur Laments, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, featuring such popular song greats as "Let Me Entertain You," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "You Gatta Get a Gimmick" and "Together, Wherever We Go."

The production is headed by HCC. Theatre Director Patty Laine, with Chet Johnson as orchestra conductor, vocal direction by Virginia's Pete Pellinen, piano accompaniment by Lanae Ronchetti and technical coordination by Dan Dolinar. Auditions are Jan. 11 and 12 from 6 to 9 p.m., at the HCC Theatre, with callbacks on Jan. 13 and 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday evenings' and Sunday afternoons. Shows will run April 22-25, and April 29 and May 2.

"Gypsy" is the real life story of the famous burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee, her childhood start on the American Vaudeville circuit, her experiences with the "crash" of vaudeville and her eventual turn to the world of burlesque. But mostly it is about her mother, Rose, one of the most famous stage mothers that ever lived and who would not rest until one of her children made it in "the big time." Everyone has a dream and Rose's dream of making it big is inspirational and contagious and is what has kept audiences coming back for more than 30 years.

The musical offers a wide spectrum of opportunities to the Hibbing area Community; the cast consists of child lead actors as well as teenage, young adult and mature actor leads, supporting roles and chorus, with an expandable cast of 25-40 cast members. For character descriptions go to the HCC Theatre Web site www.hibbing.edu. HCC Theatre is an educational theater that also encourages the local community to be involved in all aspects of the production from on stage to backstage.

All are welcome and encouraged to audition. Auditionees are asked to bring a non-returnable photo of themselves as well as 16 bars of a song to sing that highlights their range and vocal quality. Bring musical accompaniment, whether it is a karaoke version of their song or sheet music, or auditionees may accompany themselves on guitar or piano, or sing a cappella.

A piano accompanist will be available (please, no key changes). There will also be it group dance/movement audition. Wear suitable clothing to move in or bring something to change into, with appropriate shoes. Don't think you're much of a dancer? Come anyway and do what you can. Not all roles are dance roles. In addition, auditionees will be asked to read from one of the monologues provided at the audition.

Are you interested in assistant stage management or working on the crew for the productions? Come down and meet the director and fill out a form or e-mail her indicating interest, contact information and experience. If you don't have experience working on a crew or stage managing, you will be trained.

For more information, contact HCC Theater Director Patty Laine at 262-2912 or www.hibbing.edu or patricialaine@hibbing.edu
