Dangers Of Synthetic Drugs, Substance Abuse

Health officials will be warning the public about the dangers of synthetic drugs and substance abuse at a community gathering. An alcohol and drug abuse coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Health will be holding a community presentation in Hibbing to educate the public about current substance abuse trends. The meeting will focus on synthetic drugs (marijuana and bath salts,) prescription drugs, and caffeine/energy drinks.

The event will be held Nov. 9th from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Hibbing High School Auditorium. It is sponsored by the Hibbing Chemical Health Advisory Committee and Fairview Range and ISD 701.  It is free and open to the public.

Fall Yard Waste Pick-Up!

The City of Hibbing Public Works crews will be doing yard waste pickup October 24th-28th.

Residents need to have their yard waste piled neatly either on the boulevard or on the edge of the alley by 8:00 a.m. the morning of Monday October 24th.

(There is no specified route or schedule.  Each area will be picked up only once.)

The recycle center will also be open October 22nd to the 30th from noon to 8pm for your convenience.

Healthy Cooking Classes

Hibbing Community College Culinary Arts Professionals are presenting an evening of hands-on healthy cooking.  Learn about healthy food choices and how best to prepare foods that are high in nutrition and low in calories/fat.

This class is the first of a series of monthly healthy cooking classes.  Each month, prepare a healthy appetizer, entree, or side dish featuring new seasonings, herbs, and a variety of methods of preparation.

The first session will be held Thursday, November 10th from 6 to 8 p.m. in the culinary arts kitchen.  Class size is limited to 12.  The cost is $29 per person.

Range Creative Art Center Fall Classes

Fall classes will begin at the Range Creative Art Center, 328 W. Howard St.

Oil Painting: The class will be held in three sessions on Wednesdays. The Oct. 12 session will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and will focus on putting together a composition. Bring 2 or 3 of your favorite photos for reference. Canvas will be provided for each student. The instructor will be Lori Thompson. The Oct. 19 and 26 sessions will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will complete their painting.


Quilting with Jamie: Class will be held on Thursdays, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, and Nov. 3, 10 and 17, and will from from 6 to 8 p.m. The instructor will be Jamie McDougall. This class is for the beginner to intermediate. Get hooked on fabric by starting a quilt for the holidays. You will discover another fun way to be creative and keep warm. Supplies needed: 12 fat quarters (can be purchased at JoAnn Fabrics), sewing machine, cutting mat and rotary cutter.

Fall Folk Art: Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. The instructor will be Erin Juidici. She will instruct her students in an art form using objects of nature.

Four Classes in Color: Instructor Louise Lundin and her students will complete a project each session. Sessions will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 27, and Nov. 3, 10 and 17. Sign up for all four classes or just drop in. For more information, visit lundinart.com.

Acrylic Painting: Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. The instructor will be Russell James.

Saturday Series of Art: Instructors Lori Thompson and Erin Juidici will introduce a new project each Saturday.

• Origami for Kids: 1 to 3 p.m., Oct. 15. For kids in grades 3 and 4.
• Tie Dye: 1 to 3 p.m., Oct. 22. For kids grade 5 and 6.
• Bird House: Oct. 29, Mommy and Me, ages 3 to 5 years.
• Nov. 5: 1 to 3 p.m. Adults will be instructed in beading ornaments.
• Nov. 12: 1 to 3 p.m. Adults will be instructed in making lighted outdoor display.
• Nov. 19: 1 to 3 p.m. Adults will be instructed in making hurricane lamps with glitter.
