Minnesota Discovery Center announces summer hours

Minnesota Discovery Center announces new summer hours. Beginning May 28 the Museum and Heritage Park will be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. The Iron Range Research Center will remain open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Minnesota Discovery Center’s vintage trolley will begin making the 2.5 mile round-trip to Glen Location on May 28. Trolley runs are available for $2 per person plus admission on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1 and 3 p.m., Thursday at 1, 3 and 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 1, 3 and 5 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. 

Minnesota Discovery Center’s mining-themed mini-golf course will also open for the season on May 28. The cost is $2 per person per round plus admission.

Minnesota Discovery Center’s demonstrators and history players return to the park and museum Thursdays from 5-9 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m.

Other upcoming and ongoing events at Minnesota Discovery Center include:
  • two new exhibits created around the famous image, “Grace,” by Eric Enstrom of Bovey. “Grace Inspriations: A Photographic Depiction of the Iron Range” and “The Significance of Grace” run through July 31, 2011.
  • Acoustic CafĂ© featuring Matt Ray is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday May 26.
  • Art in the Park with local musicians and artists is every Thursday 7-9 p.m. starting June 2; 
  • Empowher, a two-day regional women’s expo is June 3 &4; a dinner and comedy event with comediennes Tina and Lena is Friday, June 3;
  • A traveling exhibit from the Charles M. Schulz museum in Santa Rosa, CA, “Peanuts... Naturally” opens June 11; and Grandparents Day is June 18.

Beyond The Yellow Ribbon & Deployment Ceremony

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Hibbing and Chisholm -- The Community Kick Off Event will be held May 25th at 6P in the Dining Room of the Hibbing Memorial Building. There is an immediate need for the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Hibbing and Chisholm as over 100 local members of the 194th Armored Calvary, Troop A, Army National Guard will be deploying Thursday, May 26th.

Deployment Ceremony - The Hibbing-based unit, Troop A 1-94 Calvary, is about to commence on a one-year deployment to Kuwait and Iraq working as convoy escorts.  There will be a Deployment ceremony for National guard Troop A 1-94 Calvary at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26th at the Hibbing Memorial Building

HISTORICAL SOCIETY OPEN HOUSE

The Hibbing Historical Society invites members and the public to an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Hibbing Historical Museum located on the lower level of the Memorial Building.  David Aho, owner and developer of the Mitchell Yards property, will be on hand to talk about the property which has recently been designated one of the most endangered sites in Minnesota.  Questions? MDC Dinner & Comedy set for June 3, 2011

Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm will host the comedy and singing duo “Tina and Lena” Friday, June 3, as part of a regional women’s expo, Empowher. Doors to the facility’s Pavilion will open at 5 p.m. for happy hour; at 5:30, event sponsor American Bank will welcome guests. At 6 p.m., a buffet dinner will be served. Entertainment by Tina and Lena, “singers with zingers,” begins at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $30 for MDC members and $40 for non-members.

“This duo has won rave reviews from audiences around the state and country," said Tammy Jensen, MDC Engagement & Events Manager. “They’re planning to bring an Iron Range twist to their hilarious material. It promises to be a great evening of entertainment for all ages.”

Greyhound Bus Museum is open for the season

The Greyhound Bus Museum will open at 9 am.today. Museum hours are 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

RED BULL DEPLOYMENT CEREMONIES HELD AROUND MINN.

A number of deployment ceremonies will be held throughout Minnesota to honor members of a 34th Red Bull Infantry Division brigade that’s heading to Iraq. The First Brigade Combat Team will leave at the end of May to join Operation New Dawn. The deployment is scheduled to last one year.

According to a Minnesota National Guard news release, the soldiers will be responsible for base management, as well as ensuring the security of troops and supplies transported by convoys. The 2,400-soldier brigade will be headquartered in Camp Arifjan, with smaller units throughout Kuwait.

There will be a total of 25 ceremonies around Minnesota throughout May and into the beginning of June.
Army Lt. Col. Michael Wickman says this is the second largest Minnesota National Guard deployment since World War II.

In Hibbing, there will be a deployment ceremony for the 1-94 Armored Cavalry Troop A Army National Guard on Thursday, May 26th at 11:00 AM at the Hibbing Memorial Building.

There will also be a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Community Kick-Off Event on Wednesday, May 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Memorial Building Dining Room.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is a comprehensive program that creates awareness for the purpose of connecting Servicemembers and their families with community support, training, services and resources.
