A day of Dance

Hibbing Community Education will be offering three classes in one day! On Saturday October 31st start your day with a Salsa class at 10:00 a.m., learn to Swing at 12:15 and finish the day with ballroom dance at 2:30 p.m.

Aaron Clarey will teach the basics and a few additional moves to add some flair to the routines. Have fun, get some exercise, and meet other that enjoy dancing.

Each workshop is $19 per person or $35 per couple for anyone and everyone over 14 years old. Registration is required by October 26th.

Attention Hunters!

The Hibbing Rifle and Pistol Club will open its range for hunter sight-in on Saturday October 24th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be open daily through November 6th.

The Range is located on Marskmanship Center Road near the Kelly Lake Bridge.

Benches, targets, spotting scopes, ear and eye protection are provided. There is a $5 fee per firearm. Avoid the rush, come early and dress warm. The coffee pot will be on.

Digging for Your Roots Genealogy Conference

Minnesota Discovery Center will host the 28th annual conference on Saturday, Oct 17, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The conference is for genealogical researchers of all levels and cultural resource professionals and is organized and hosted by Range Genealogical Society (RGS) and the Discover Center Research Library. This years theme is "On the Right Track" and emphasized personal stories of discover and success.

Features speakers are:

• Lou Mattson who tracked one family from the old country to the United States and followed their stories through generations.
• Doug Morrison Cleary will discuss the use of DNA in tracing genealogies.
• Iron Range History Players will present the story of Laurel Sherman, a rural Minnesota school teacher from 1910 to 1920.
• Dr. Melissa Steware will present "Mercy's Story: Uncovering a Quilt's Creator"
• Lauren Nickisch will speak about the "Hephzibeth: Woman of Iron"

One Day - Two Great Events

On Saturday, October 3rd take the kids to the Fire Department open house and the Creation Season Event at St. James.

The Fire Department Open house is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Fire Department. The Open House is the official kick off for Fire Prevention week and they will have the following events and activities:

• Displays of our equipment, resources and of course some good old fashioned face to face communications between the members of the fire department and the general public.
• Serving our usual free lunch of hot dogs, beans and chips as well as some Pepsi products.
• Demonstrations by our newly certified Technical Rescue Team (TRT), as well as fire extinguisher demonstrations
• Giving away batteries and smoke alarms to those that are in need and doing blood pressure testing
• Area vendors will have displays for our visitors to see and learn about what medical and safety resources are available to the general public
• Photos with Sparky

A Creation Season Event will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at 2028 7th Ave E on Saturday October 3rd from 11:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. Creations Season is the celebration of God's Presence (presents) in all of creation.

Activities include: Solar energy, Compact Fluorescent Lighting, Plastics impact on the environment, Recycling, Reducing, Reusing, Fuel assistance/weatherization application, energy efficient cars, clean energy resource team, crocheting plastic bags, dog agility, children's face painting, Heavenly Hogwiches & Hot Dogs from 11a -1p

Historical Hibbing

This Hibbing Walking Tour was adapted from one created as a Centennial Project in 1993 by the Hibbing Daily Tribune and Roger Saccoman Architecture. The walk is written to start at Hibbing Memorial Building, but it can actually be started anywhere along the route. There are also many other historic and aesthetically beautiful sites in Hibbing not on the tour. The 22 numbered sites listed were chosen a s examples to give visitors and native alike a sense of Hibbing's history. The walk is approximately two miles in length.

North Hibbing/Hull Rust Mahoning Mine

Enjoy the map and guide for the North Hibbing - Hull Rust Mahoning Mine Walking Tour. The Historical data provided was documented by Patricia Mestek, former Director of the Hibbing Historical Society. Start the walking tour from the parking lot at 5th Avenue East and 16th Street.

Bob Dylan

This tour was developed by staff at the Hibbing Public Library. It takes you along a path that could have been walked by Bob Dylan. Photographs of Feldman’s, L&B Café, the Synagogue, and the Alice School are the property of Aubin Photo Studio in Hibbing. The walk starts at the building that was Zimmerman Electric and ends at the Androy, the site of Bob’s Bar Mitzvah celebration. This walking tour is approximately 1.9 miles. We even have a podcast for this tour. Listen to it ahead of time or download it to your MP3 player and take it with you.

Community Walking Program

The Hibbing Community Education sponsors the Community Walking Program at the Hibbing High School. This program is for all Hibbing area residents, youth to seniors, cardiac patients, and persons with disabilities. The school setting provides a safe, warm, and positive atmosphere to exercise during the upcoming winter months. No walking on days when school is not in session.

From October 2009 to early May 2010, Monday - Friday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the Ground floor level of the Hibbing High School. There are no fees for this program.

Hibbing Beautification Project

The Hibbing > We're Ore and More brand team is looking for volunteers to assist in planting trees and shrubs along the south side of the Mesabi Trail at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29th.

The Hibbing Brand Team, the City of Hibbing and Northern Landscapes are partnering to create an attractive visual entrance into Hibbing along the Mesabi Trial. Research has found that the Mesabi Trail is one of Hibbing's powerful outdoor assets fro both residents and tourists.

The beautification project will consist of two phases. On Tuesday, volunteers will focus on phase one: planting trees and shrubs along that portion of the Mesabi Trail which urns along the northwest corner of the Industrial Park. In the spring, phase two will include planting ornamental shrubs at the trail intersection by the Greyhound Bus Museum and installing a bench and welcome sign.

Please bring you own shovel, gardening gloves and friends. The planting holed will be pre-dug, the soil transported, and the trees and shrubs made available for planting.

Cool Night at the Library

Thursday, September 24, 2009 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Hibbing Public Library

Everybody’s favorite monkey, Curious George will make an appearance so bring your camera for a great photo opportunity. The Hibbing City Band will be performing favorites of all ages in the reference room throughout the evening. While down in the auditorium there will be a book give away for children sponsored by the Literacy Action Center. The Friends of the Library will be serving refreshments and selling book bags.

Bring the entire family to the library to celebrate the fall season.
