Dance Classes with Brian Cloud

Sign up for four weeks of dance classes with Brian Cloud, offered by Hibbing Community Education.

• A Salsa (LA style) class will be held on Mondays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26, at the Hibbing High School Cafeteria. Basic Salsa will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m., with open dancing from 6:45 to 7 p.m. Salsa II (just beyond basics) from 7 to 7:45 p.m., with open dancing from 7:45 to 8 p.m. Intermediate Salsa II from 8 to 8:45 p.m., with open dancing from 8:45 to 9 p.m.

• Social Latin (Cha Cha/Rhumba) will held on Thursdays, March 8, 15, 22 and 29, at the HHS Cafeteria. Social Latin I (basics) from 6 to 6:45 p.m., with open dancing from 6:45 to 7 p.m. Social Latin II (just beyond basics) from 7 to 7:45 p.m., with open dancing from 7:45 to 8 p.m.

• Friday West Coast Swing (WCS) will be held on Friday, March 9, 16, 23 and 30, at the HHS Cafeteria WCS I (basics) will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. with open dancing from 6:45 to 7 p.m. WCS II (just beyond basics) from 7 to 7:45 p.m., with open dancing from 7:45 to 8 p.m.

Pennies for Play

The Communities of International Falls and Hibbing, Minnesota have joined together to lure the Minnesota Vikings to visit their towns as a part of the 2011 “You Made the Team” Community Tour.

The two northern Minnesota communities will participate in a friendly competition in an effort to entice the team to visit and to encourage active living in their children. The competition is called “Pennies for Play.” In Hibbing the money raised will benefit the Greenhaven Community Playground on 6th Avenue East and 33rd St. In International Falls the money raised will benefit Kerry Park on 11th Street.

The money will be raised until the Vikings visit or until the end of the school year, whichever comes first.

Hibbing’s Greenhaven Community Playground:
The Greenhaven Community Playground is located on the corner of 33rd Street and 6th Avenue East in Hibbing. It is currently surrounded by a chain link fence and has older playground equipment on the east side of the lot. The west side of the lot is currently a mowed grassy area.

We would like to develop a park that would serve the youngest children in the area. The playground is located across the street from the Greenhaven Apartments. These apartments are subsidized housing serving low income residents. Average household income is less than $12, 000 per year. There are currently 60 children ages 5 and under living in these apartments. The neighboring houses are close to the Greenhaven Elementary School and likely have many additional young children in residence.
Creating a community park that serves those under 5 would promote parental involvement and help to foster a sense of pride in the park. We envision updating the equipment, planting shade trees, adding picnic tables or sitting areas and perhaps a mini soccer field.

Animal Shelter Christmas Open House: A Time of Sharing

From December 13 through December 24, the Hibbing Animal Shelter and Humane Society is holding a Christmas Open House at the Shelter. The hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The purpose of the Open House is two-fold: first, to acquaint the public with our many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens waiting for adoption, and secondly, to ask for Christmas donations of pet supplies for the Shelter, as well as for those people in the community who are in need of help caring for their animals. We want people to help out families first, of course, but if they can afford it, to also remember our animal friends with gifts of dog and cat food, pet treats and chews, toys, catnip, blankets and collars.

The Shelter recommends Pedigree Dog Kibble (for large and small breeds), Purina Puppy Chow, Meow Mix Dry Cat Food, Friskies Canned Cat Food, and Purina Kitten Chow. The Shelter will collect the donations and then share and distribute them at the Salvation Army, on December 23, to pet owners who need pet food and supplies. The public is asked to stop in at the Shelter, or call them, to either donate supplies, or request them for their pets in need. Our hours are from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

To join in with the Christmas spirit, the Shelter will be serving hot apple cider and cookies from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday from December 13 through December 24.

The Shelter encourages everyone to stop by the Shelter, see our pets, listen to Christmas carols, have a hot drink, and donate if they can. The Shelter is located at 11215 Hwy 37, Hibbing. How to protect yourself and others from the flu:

Primary Election - Tuesday, August 10th

Due to a change in federal law, the Minnesota Primary Election will be held on August 10, 2010.

Precincts will be open from 7:00 am until 8:00 p.m on the 10th and if you can't make it that day, you may vote absentee in the City Finance office on Saturday and Monday.

MDHA Youth Day

MDHA Youth Day The Hibbing/Chisholm Chapter of MDHA will hold a YOUTH DAY on SAT., AUGUST 7TH at the Mid-Range Marksmanship Center in Hibbing.

This will be an all-day event and area youth will have the opportunity to experience: Archery, Muzzleloaders, Small Bore Rifles, Trapshooting, Air Guns and Video Hunting! In addition there will be instruction on safety, ethics, survival & waterfowl calling.

All participants will receive a MDHA Youth Day hat and lunch.

Prizes will be awarded. Limited to 10 to 18 year olds.

There is no charge, but all participants must pre-register by August 3rd, 2010. Space is limited so register early to avoid disappointment! Advance registration is absolutely required!

Any youth who does not have a firearms safety certificate must be accompanied by an adult. All parents and guardians are invited to join us for the day.

Welcome to the American Legion State Baseball Tournament

American Legion Post 222 will be hosting the State Baseball Tournament from
July 29 through August 1, 2010 in Hibbing.

Game times for Thursday, July 29, through Saturday, July 31 are 10:00 am, 1:00 pm,
4:30 pm and 7:30 pm at the Al Nyberg field.

The championship game is Sunday, August 1 at 1:00 pm.

Hibbing Jubilee - July 10th!

The Hibbing Jubilee will start off with the 4th Annual Business After Hours Jubilee Raffle at Mr. Nick's Corner Bar on Thursday July 8th from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Gallery Hop - Downtown Hibbing

Downtown Hibbing will transform into a street of galleries in stores and businesses along Howard Street from 2 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 24.

Businesses open their doors wide for the public to come view original artwork and meet the artists. Many artists will have works for sale. Come enjoy and afternoon and evening of art and friendship in our community.

Gigantic Fireworks Display!

The City of Hibbing, Hibbing Raceway, and WMFG radio proudly sponsor the Governors Cup Racing and Fireworks show this weekend.

At about 10:00 p.m. Friday night, June 18th urn your radio to WMFG 106.3 and listen to music in sync as you watch the fireworks.

For the best viewing stay after the races in the grandstands or the parking lots at the Paulucci Planetarium, Hibbing Community College, Lincoln Middle School or Vic Power Fields.

Rain date is Saturday, June 19th.

New Red Cross Classes

Sign up now for the American Red Cross classes. The Hibbing Red Cross offers a variety of CPR, First Aid, Babysitting and other life saving classes. Two other classes they offer are:

1. Waterfront Lifeguard Training that will be held in Hibbing June 7-11 for those at least 15 years old and can swim 500 yards continuously.
   
   
2. Wilderness and Remote First Aid Classes will be offered this spring and summer. This is a 17 hour scenario-based class designed for people who work or play in remote wilderness areas.

Dylan Days

Dylan Days will be held May 27-30, 2010. Over the past several years Dylan Days has built a grassroots tradition including the singer/songwriter contest, writing contest and literary showcase, one act playwright contest, visual arts competition, Bobby Zimmerman bus tour, live music series and the Hibbing Arts Council Dylan Days Benefit Concert, along with several other annual events.

New Garbage Collection System in Hibbing

THE INDIVIDUAL CARTS ARE ARRIVING On May 17 the new garbage carts will be arriving and will start being delivered to individual homes.

The carts will be delivered in front of your residence along with a garbage day pickup schedule.
On your scheduled pickup day place your cart in the alley by your garage apron and we will need about 3 feet of clearance around the cart.

If you have a driveway going to the street place your cart next to the curb on your scheduled pickup day and we need about 3 feet of clearance around the cart.

Alley steel containers will be removed as the carts are delivered.

Recycling will stay the same until June 1, 2010

Hibbing High School Golf Scramble

The Hibbing High School activities department will host the third annual Golf Scramble Fund Raiser on Monday, June 14, at the Mesaba Country Club.

Individual entry is $100 per golfer, which includes green fees, dinner and prize. Sign up as either an individual participant or organize your own four- or fivesome.

Proceeds from the golf scramble will be used to provide funding and assistance for underprivileged students at Hibbing High School. This includes both equipment and registration fee assistance. It will also provide funding for the addition of athletic development coach for the schools’ weight room.

One Book, One Community at the Hibbing Public Library

This week at the library enjoy several events as part of the One Book, One Community event.

• Piano Recital by students of Nadine Berg on Monday, April 26th, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the library auditorium.
  
  
• Story Time is a program for pre-schoolers with books, songs and the “Letter of the Week.” Open play if time permits. Volunteers are needed for craft projects. Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
  
  
• Poets Workshop for Kids on Wednesday, April 28th, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the children's room. Bart and Ross will present a poetry and music program for kids.

  As a poetry-and-music duo, The Sutter Brothers have performed all over Minnesota and beyond—from Sandstone’s Quarry Days to the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh, from the Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, Wisconsin, to the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul.
  
  Ross is known for his rich baritone voice and mastery of an impressive array of instruments: guitar, button accordion, mountain dulcimer, and Irish drum. He has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and at The Winnipeg Folk Festival.
  
  The author of six books, Bart has won the Minnesota Book Award three times and was named the first Poet Laureate of Duluth.
  
  Though Ross and Bart have established individual reputations, when they perform as a pair, their work has the kind of counterpoint and easy intimacy unique to sibling acts. A blend of original poetry and traditional folk music, their show draws on their small-town roots and Swedish-American heritage.
  
  The Sutter Brothers have performed at the American Swedish Institute and were recently featured in the film Pretty Much 100% Scandinavian.
  

• Toddle Time at the library a program for toddlers aged 2-3 years with books, songs and finger plays. Open play if time permits. Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
  

• Magic Mama Concert on Friday, April 30th, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the library auditorium.

  Magic Mama is often called an “edu-tainer". She has a commitment to the environment and shares her knowledge with everyone through music and fun. Reviews of her performances state, “brings a fresh, new perspective to children’s music” and “songs are perfect for children and offer much for adults to enjoy as well”.
  

Boy Scout Expo

Join the Boy Scouts of America on Saturday, April 24, as they celebrate their 100^th anniversary in Hibbing at the Irongate Mall. As part of that celebration the Sleeping Giant District of the Voyageurs Area Council will be hosting a Scout “Expo” at the Mall on April 24 from 10 – 4. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Hibbing, Orr, Cook, Virginia and other surrounding towns will gather to display the talents and skills they have learned and use as scouts. The theme is “Saluting 100 Years” and so both new and old skills will be demonstrated. For the first time at the Expo this year there will be outside as well as indoor displays. Parents can learn how to sign their son up for Scouting and boys will see how much fun the program can be.

Also at the Expo will be the Derby Car Race Finals where the top winners from each unit will race against each other to determine who has the fastest car! Best of show cars will be on display and the public can vote for their favorite car.

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for America's youth. Through A Year of Celebration, we celebrate this legacy and commit ourselves to inspire and prepare future generations.

Are you an artist or do you know an artist? Join the dozens of artists who show their works to the public during the 18th Annual Gallery Hop. All levels of artistic experience are welcome.

The Hibbing Community College is offering classes on Social Networking because of the constant growth and change in communication.

• Facebook I - This introductory Facebook class is designed for beginners. If you are interested in establishing a Facebook account and learning how to use Facebook to converse with family/friends, reunite with friends from your past, or meet someone new…..this class is for you! March 16, 2010 6pm-8pm $29
• Facebook II - This intermediate class will teach you some of the more advanced features of Facebook such as: security, applications, photos, videos, pages, and more… Participants should already have a Facebook account. Feel free to bring your camera and/or videos to upload and fill your photo albums, change your profile pictures, etc. If you want to do more with Facebook, this class is for you! • Basic Internet Security is taught in three modules, each 3 hours in length and will teach individuals basic Internet technology skills. There is no pre-requisite requirement. April 14, 21, 28 6pm-9pm $117
• Create Your Own Web Page - This course focuses on the design, development, and maintenance of World Wide Web pages using the Extensible Hyper Text Markup Language (XHTML). Students learn how to manage Web page fonts, colors, and graphics and will create Web pages which include text, images, tables, frames, forms, and image maps.
